To further enhance the experience of the 2005 State Fair of Texas, we propose to create a scale model exhibit of the Fair Grounds Esplanade made entirely of LEGO. The exhibit would include the Parry Avenue Entry Gates, various monuments, reflecting pool, exhibit halls, the Hall of State, Big Tex and possibly the proposed DART station and Age of Steam Museum. Mini-figures (see photo inset right) are 1 5/8 inches in height and would populate the exhibit, determining the scale so that it would be an estimated six feet in length. These mini-figures could be engaged in various comical activities such as the formation of a water-skiing pyramid on the reflecting pool. The exhibit would be mounted to a wheeled table for easy transport.
As members of TexLUG/Dallas (Texas LEGO User’s Group), we, David Leahy of Plano and Dave T. Smith of Dallas, are in no way associated with LEGO Group. However, conversations with Mr. Craig Holcolm of Friends of Fair Park indicate that corporate funding of such an exhibit could be readily available. Mosaics would be utilized to display logos indicating corporate sponsorship as well as the celebrated exhibit hall murals (see photo inset below.) Given the research, materials and labor for such an endeavor, funding in the $10K-$20K range could easily be required.

To aid in the visualization of the project, photos of sample models have been provided. The bricks used here are from the personal collections of Leahy and Smith. Further brick supplies can be purchased either directly from LEGO or on-line resellers. First, the northwest corner of the Automobile Building, featuring Josset’s statue depicting France at the entrance portico.

Should time and funding be available, perhaps other phases could be added to incorporate the remainder of Fair Park including the Cotton Bowl, Midway and the Science Place (see image below.) Once complete, each phase of this exhibit would make for an entertaining method of orientation for visitors of any age.
